Liard Highway KM 180 Completed February 2010. 15.0m pre-cast concrete slab bridge founded on steel piles. Project located on Liard Highway. Fort Simpson, Northwest Territories. Owner: Government of NWT.
Windrem Creek Bridge Completed November 2009. This is a pre-cast concrete structure founded on steel piling. Financed by Olympic Legacy funding to allow for access to a new retirement community in the town of Chetwynd. Owner: District of Chetwynd
Iron Creek Bridge Completed August 2009. Removal and replacement of existing structure. Renovation of existing foundation. Supply and installation of pre-cast box beam bridge and associated road work. Project located on Upper Halfway River Road, Fort St John B.C. Owner: B.C. Ministry of Transportation
Rose River Bridge Completed May 2009.Renovation of the existing Acrow bridge structure. Supply and installation of new approach spans. Project located Canol Road No.6, Yukon Territory. Owner: Yukon Department of Highways
Ogilvie Bridge Completed October 2009. Removal of 140' Acrow Bridge, followed by the construction and installation of new 110' steel/concrete structure on steel pilings that were drilled into weathered bedrock, rock socketted and then filled with tremmied concrete. Project located 40 kms north of Bell II Lodge on Highway 37 N (Stewart-Cassiar Highway). Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Cache Creek Bridge Completed summer 2008. Located on Highway 29 between Hudson Hope and Ft. St. John, BC. This is a 46m clear span, steel girder, composite bridge founded on a pile driven foundation. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Caribou Creek Bridge Completed April 2008. Located on Dempster Highway near Inuvik, NWT. Piles were augured into 30' of permafrost before being conventionally driven to refusal by diesel pile driving methods. Owner: Government of NWT
Bambrick Bridge Located in the Chilcotin area (Big Creek) southwest of Williams Lake, BC. This bridge is constructed of pre-cast concrete beams founded on post and pad footings. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Biliston Creek Bridge Located in Metchosin, BC. This is a replacement structure for an existing bridge. Three spans, two lane box beam founded on driven steel piles. Owner: District of Metchosin
Nechako River Bridge Located north of Vanderhoof, BC. This highway bridge is constructed with weathering steel girders and poured in place concrete. Total reconstruction of three spans plus addition of one span to 228 metres total length.
Nation River Bridge Located north of Fort St. James, BC. Three span, two lane replacement bridge constructed of concrete. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Cochrane Road Overpass Located on Vancouver Island, BC. This bridge crosses over the new four lane freeway with a low profile 56 metre span. Owner: Ministry of Transportation

Lower Burnt Road Completed January 2010. Located in Chetwynd B.C. Supply and installation of a new 18.0m steel and timber bridge founded on steel pile foundation. Owner: Spectra Energy
Lower More River Bridge Completed December 2008. Located near Bob Quinn, BC. Launching and installation of a 300' bridge over the Lower More River to provide access for a mining project. Owner: Galore Creek Mining Corporation
Castle Creek Bridge Completed December 2008. Located in McBride, BC. Installation of an 85' steel girder bridge for logging access. Owner: Carrier Forest Products Ltd.
Clemina Creek Bridge Completed August 2008. Located in Valemount, BC. Installation of a 70' steel and concrete bridge to provide access for a hydroelectric project. Owner: Canadian Hydro
Nithi River Bridge Completed July 2008. Located in Fraser Lake, BC. Removal of two culverts to restore fisheries habitat. Replaced with a 70' steel and concrete composite bridge. Owner: Ministry of Forests and Range
Moberly FSR Bridge Replacements Completed July 2008. Located in Moberly Lake, BC. Supply and installation of seven replacement bridge structures to allow construction of a wind farm project. Owner: Dokie Wind Energy
Iskut River Bridge Located in Bob Quinn, BC with a 119 metre span across the Iskut River. Steel girder, non-composite deck. Rated at 165 ton loading for mining traffic. Constructed over a two month period. Owner: Galore Creek Mining Corporation
Muskwie River Bridge Located in Bob Quinn, BC with a 98 metre span across the Muskwie River. All components and equipment were disassembled into weights that could be flown by heavy lift helicopter. Owner: Galore Creek Mining Corporation
Skeena Bridge Constructed with concrete and steel in remote northern BC, 200+ metres of bridge span the Skeena River. Access was limited to one side due to environmental and remoteness issues. The completed concrete decked bridge opened up a new resource area in northwest British Columbia in 1996. Owner: Skeena Cellulose
Maxan River Bridge Located on the Thompson FSR near Burns Lake, BC. 48 metre steel girder and concrete composite deck, founded on steel driven pilings. Owner: Ministry of Forests and Range
Coyote Creek Bridge Located in Tatoga Lake, BC. 33 metre non-composite founded on log cribbing. Installed for minerals exploration. Owner: Red Chris Development Corporation

Portable Bridge Rentals + Sales

Formula Contractors can provide rental structures ranging from 6m (20 ft) to 30m (100 ft). These structures have a standard deck width of 4.3 m (14 ft) and are designed to a 75 tonne or 100 tonne load rating. Custom specifications can be incorporated into many rental situations. A viable option that is available to all clients is "Rental Purchase". This can suit many client's needs, and is an effective cost saving tool in many resource programs.

Formula stocks a selection of engineered portable bridges that can be used as temporary construction bridges or left in place longer for a more permanent crossing. These bridges start at 20 feet in length and as long as 100 feet, usually 14 foot wide timber decks and loading to 100 tons, however heavier loading can be accommodated as required. Our sectional barge can be assembled end to end to create a light vehicle causeway up to 180 feet long.

Winch truck bridges in stock up to 80 feet in length with steel rails and wood decks. These are easily loadable with one winch truck and off load the same way.
Spans can be placed on small concrete footings where rock is found and are easily buildable in the winter using the ice as a dry access platform for both equipment and personnel.
Simple log cribs can be built to provide a good footing for temporary bridges.
For some customers panelized decks are easier to handle than winch style bridges. These bridge components are usually lighter and can be installed with smaller equipment as well as freighted in lighter loads. Please contact Formula Contractors today for more information.

Structural Steel Erection

Formula Contractors has the manpower, equipment and expertise to provide structural steel erection for structures and industrial plants.

Endako Mine Expansion Completed March 2010. Erection of 1400 tonne of steel for the new 92,000 square foot process mill at the Endako Mine project. Formula provided all crew, equipment and engineered procedures to complete this project on time and budget. Owner: Thompson Creek Metals.
Bear Mountain Sub-station Completed January 2009. Structural Steel Erection for an electrical sub-station located near Dawson Creek, BC. Formula provided all engineered drawings and steel erection. The tallest tower was 16.5m and a total of 35,000 kg of galvanized steel was erected. Owner: Bear Mountain Wind Energy

 

Girder Erection

Formula Contractors has successfully completed installing girders up to 220m. From crane erected structures to technical girder launching using rollers, cantilevering, skylines and temporary shoring towers. Our projects are engineered for each site based on its specific requirements and available equipment.

Erection of beams for new highway overpass over CP rail line in Calgary, Alberta. Owner: Alberta Infrastructure
Responsible for off loading 12 foot high steel girders from rail cars in the vertical position and rotating to the horizontal position and loading onto special trailers. The steel beams could not be shipped vertically due to their height once loaded onto trailers, the beams were then transported to Kicking Horse Pass bridge site. Owner: Flat Iron Construction
Erection of steel trapezoidal girders over the new Vancouver Island Highway. Owner: Government of British Columbia
Winter installation of 33 metre long pre-cast concrete I-girders over the Nation River north of Fort St. James, BC. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Falsework using post tensioned cables, 100 KIP shoring and 22 hillman rollers for launching 300 tons of structural steel. Owner: Skeena Cellulose

 

Drainage Structures

Formula Contractors specializes in the rapid installation of project specific culverts and drainage structures with minimum impact upon the surrounding environment.

Formula is able to provide innovative and cost effective solutions for stream crossings. Formula is skilled in the design and installation of structures that are environmentally sensitive, require minimal site disturbance and allow for safe fish passage.

Cheviot Mine: 24 metre span open bottom culvert for Cheviot Mine access near Hinton, Alberta. This structure required 50,000 cubic metres of highly compacted manufactured end fill to ensure culvert's structural integrity.

Cheviot Mine: Open bottom culvert underpass for recreational access underneath three lane mine haul road.
9.5m x 40m multi-plate arch culvert founded on steel driven piles. Located on the Nazko Highway near Quesnel, BC. Cast in place headwalls. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Installation of a concrete box culvert under an active CN rail siding near Upper Fraser, BC.
Open bottom culvert with concrete end walls and wings for fill retention.
Elliptical culvert under resource haul road with well armored inlet to minimize erosion possibilities.
Pre-cast concrete culvert backfilled with native material on resource road system
Installation of a pre-cast open bottom culvert. The unit arrives in pieces and is assembled at site. They are quick to install and have a minimal effect on the existing stream.

Ogilvie Bridge Completed October 2009. Removal of 140' Acrow Bridge for the BC Ministry of Transportation - located 40 kms north of Bell II Lodge on Highway 37 N (Stewart-Cassiar Highway). Disassemble structure, catalogue components, band & palletize components, ship to Terrace, unload and inventory. Total weight of components was approx. 135,000 lbs. Owner: Ministry of Transportation
Endako Expansion Project Winter 2008-2009. Formula Contractors provided the materials, crew and equipment needed to offload, inventory, and store over 5.5 million pounds of delivered structural building steel and mining components.
Galore Creek Construction Project March to December 2007. Formula Contractors provided equipment and expertise necessary for materials handling at the staging area of the Galore Creek Construction Project. This involved the coordination of materials flow to six companies working throughout the 175km long working area. We provided timely strategic rigging, lifting and staging of millions of pounds of equipment and supplies for air lift. During the project we assisted in the handling and dismantling of bulldozers, graders, rock trucks, excavators, service trucks, ambulances, building materials, compressed gasses, fuel, camp trailers, tunneling equipment, bridge materials, pile driving equipment, and daily camp supplies to name a few.

Renovations + Repairs

Formula Contractors has the technical expertise to complete cost effective renovations and emergency repairs to existing structures. Most can be completed with minimum impact to traffic flows. Formula has completed numerous projects and we are available for emergency repairs.

Nechako River Bridge Located on Highway 16 West at Fort Fraser, BC. This project required alternating highway lane closures while the bridge spans were raised with hydraulic 150 ton jacks so the replacement of bearings could be made.
East Pine Bridge Located on Highway 97 North near Chetwynd, BC. 1,600 holes were drilled and bolted to strengthen the existing structure.

Johnson Street Bridge: Upgrade The Johnson Street Bridge in Victoria BC. Is a three lane riveted Bascule (lift) span built in 1921. Formula completed a major structural upgrade in the spring of 1999. Items included removal and replacement of concrete decks, removal and replacement of structural rivets and addition of key structural steel elements. All of this was completed while keeping one traffic lane and pedestrian access open. Third photo: new side walk over hang brackets were installed and later a new concrete sidewalk was cast in conjunction with the new driving surfaces. Concrete

Formula Contractors can provide concrete foundation construction from excavation, layout, forming, concrete batching and placing, rebar placement and concrete finishing.

Bear Mountain Wind Farm Completed October 2008. Located near Dawson Creek, BC. Construction of the first ever Wind Farm/Tower foundations poured in BC. This included 13,000 m3 of on-site batched and placed concrete and 1.25 million kg of reinforcing steel. Owner: Bear Mountain Wind Energy

 

Pile Driving

Formula Contractors owns and operates a range of pile driving equipment. Truck mounted and track mounted cranes are available with drop, diesel, air, churn and vibro hammer configurations. Formula is able to provide pile driving services for bridge structures, foundations, mill construction, oil field construction, retaining structures and marine dredging and construction. Formula can install steel pipe piling, timber piles, H-type piles and sheet piles.

We employee certified crane operators and ticketed trades people and are available for projects throughout western Canada.

Northwest Community College Completed November 2009.Supply and installation of foundation piling for Northwest Community College expansion. Piles were driven using drop and diesel hammer configurations. Each location was then augured and cleaned. Reinforcing steel cages were installed then filled with concrete. Okanagan Lake, BC. Three piece sectional barge used for marine pile driving and construction.
Barriere River, BC. Sheet pile wall installed with a vibro hammer used to isolate excavated area in river.
Hinton, Alberta. Installing foundation piling for a mill upgrade.
Lower More River, BC. Installing temporary bridge crossing with an excavator-mounted pile driver.
Sinclair Mills, BC. Installation of steel H-piles under an existing active rail line.
Lower More River, BC. Temporary piling being removed with a vibro hammer.
Inuvik, Northwest Territories. Installing bridge foundation piles with an 80 ton crane and diesel hammer.

RENEWABLE ENERGY

From concept to completion, Formula Contractors delivers comprehensive civil construction services to the Renewable Energy Sector. Formula’s most recent achievement is the completion of the first wind farm in British Columbia; the Bear Mountain Wind Farm (BMWF), near Dawson Creek. The completion of this project is not only one of our proudest accomplishments, but it is also a significant contribution towards the reduction of carbon emissions.

'Alta Gas' Bear Mountain Wind Farm With Enercon Machines in service. Located near Dawson Creek, this is the first ever wind energy project in the Province of British Columbia to be generating power for the BC Hydro Grid for public consumption. These turbines (which are founded on Formula foundations) feed an on-site substation (that Formula did the civil works for) in order to provide power to 35,000 BC homes. We are proud of this project and for having the opportunity to be a part of this significant build - branded as the first wind energy project in British Columbia. Owner: Bear Mountain Wind Energy

Resource Access + Development

Formula Contractors provides general contract services in areas such as resource road construction, oilfield construction, mine site development, reclamation, deactivation, rock revetment, retaining structures, dragline dredging and general earth works.

We operate a fleet of modern earth moving equipment including excavators, dozers, packers, articulated dumps and cranes. We can provide hourly or contract pricing for most projects and are available for projects throughout western Canada.

219 Road - Dawson Creek, BC Excavation of 15,000 m3 of existing road fill to replace a failed highways culvert.
